Team News:

New York City FC
Is this the year NYCFC finally get out of the fourth round and perhaps make a run in the USOC? The good news for the Cityzens is they have more young American talent as part of a deep roster than ever before and they enter with an MLS-best 10-match unbeaten streak, including a 5-2 win over FC Cincinnati at Yankee Stadium Thursday.

Alexandru Mitrita, Heber and Ismael Tajouri-Shradi staked NYCFC to a three-goal advantage before the half-hour mark. Dome Torrent lamented his team taking their collective foot off the gas to close out the first half, but they picked things up after halftime with another goal by Heber and the last by Maxi Moralez.

North Carolina FC
Coached by Dave Sarachan, North Carolina FC entered the USOC in the second round, where they defeated the Richmond Kickers of USL League One, 4-1. With the score tied at 1 entering the second half, Robert Kristo struck for a brace in an eight-minute span and Yamikani Chester added a fourth goal in the 70th minute.

In the third round, also played at WakeMed Soccer Park, D.J. Taylor scored the lone goal two minutes into the second half to defeat Florida Soccer Soldiers from the UPSL.

Portland Timbers preparing to once again face Seattle Sounders in U.S. Open Cup

The Portland Timbers will face a familiar foe Wednesday in the fourth round of the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

For the third time in the last five years, the Timbers will head north on I-5 to face their rivals, the Seattle Sounders, in the fourth round of the annual tournament.

“Against Seattle, it’s always a tough match," Timbers coach Giovanni Savarese said. "We want to compete in U.S. Open Cup. We need to prepare well and try to give everything we have to qualify to the next round.”

While 11 MLS teams will have the benefit of facing lower division clubs in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup, the Timbers are one of 10 MLS teams that will be taking on another MLS opponent in the fourth round of this year’s tournament.

Portland has faced an MLS opponent in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup in each of the last five years. The Timbers are the only team in MLS that has not played a lower division opponent in the U.S. Open Cup during that span.

U.S. Soccer pairs teams by geographical proximity in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup. Since 2018, U.S. Soccer has divided teams geographically into eight groups of four before holding a random draw to determine the pairings within each group. The Timbers’ geographical group has included the Sounders and San Jose Earthquakes, making it more likely that Portland will be paired with an MLS opponent. A random selection process is used to determine which team will host the game.

Despite being paired with an MLS opponent in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup in each of the last five years, the Timbers have advanced out of the fourth round in three out of the last four years. Last season, Portland made a run to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup before falling to LAFC. The winner of the U.S. Open Cup earns an automatic berth to CONCACAF Champions League.
-------
“We’re going to go to Seattle and give everything that we have,” Savarese said.

Historically, teams throughout MLS have rotated their lineups during the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup in an attempt to effectively navigate the MLS schedule while still competing in the tournament. Savarese started just one regular MLS starter and only a handful of regular MLS contributors in last year’s fourth round game against the Earthquakes.

But the Timbers were navigating a tough schedule with three games in eight days when they played the Earthquakes in the U.S. Open Cup last season. This year, the Timbers are taking on the Sounders in the U.S. Open Cup at a time when MLS is taking a break around the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup. After facing the Sounders Wednesday, the Timbers won’t play again until June 22.

That means that Savarese will have the option to start his top lineup in Wednesday’s game, if he chooses. He could also opt to start a mixed lineup, giving players that regularly feature for Portland’s lower division club, T2, a chance to start alongside regular MLS starters. Timbers star Sebastian Blanco, who will be suspended for Portland’s next MLS game against the Houston Dynamo on June 22 due to yellow card accumulation, could potentially feature in Wednesday’s match.
-------------

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup has not been kind to the New York City Football Club.

Beginning with the club’s expansion season in 2015, the Pigeons have failed to win a match or advance past the fourth round of the tournament – the starting point for all Major League Soccer teams.

NYCFC will attempt to salve its Cup wounds June 12 when it hosts USL Championship side North Carolina FC at Belson Stadium on the campus of St. John’s University.

The NYCFC Academy teams train at St. John’s and plays home matches on the artificial surface at Belson – a soccer-specific stadium with a capacity of 2,168.

A pair of New York City clubs met in the inaugural U.S. Open Cup title match when the Brooklyn Field Club defeated Brooklyn Celtic 2-1 in 1914 in front of 10,000 supporters at Coates Field in Pawtucket, R.I.

NYCFC will attempt to be the 26th team from the five boroughs to win the cup, but history suggests otherwise.

In 2015, the eventual NASL Champion New York Cosmos, under current Portland Timbers coach Giovanni Savarese, advanced past NYCFC on penalties after Kwadwo Poku’s brace gave City a 2-0 advantage in the second half.

Savarese’s squad eliminated the Bronx boys a year later as well, 1-0, while the New York Red Bulls outscored New York City in the last two years at Red Bull Arena. Daniel Royer scored in a 1-0 win in 2017 and last year, Royer’s two goals contributed to a 4-0 thrashing in Harrison, N.J.

New York City head coach Dome Torrent now has the opportunity to use the players who have seen limited or no minutes with the first team in 2019 – a commendable group according to the second year coach.

“Right now, everybody deserves for their performance to play, but I am so sorry – soccer is about 11 players,” Torrent said after the recent 2-0 road win over the L.A. Galaxy. “I would like to play with 20 players because all of them deserve to play.”

Taty Castellanos (442 minutes), Jesus Medina (311 minutes), Keaton Parks (28 minutes) Juan Pablo Torres (no appearances) and Sebastien Ibeagha (217 minutes) are the players who are apt to earn spots in the starting XI against North Carolina FC along with back-up goalkeeper, Brad Stuver (no appearances).
