England’s hopes of winning the Uefa Nations League are over after calamitous defending gifted the Netherlands a 3-1 semi-final, extra-time win here in Guimaraes.

Marcus Rashford had given Gareth Southgate’s side a 32nd-minute lead from the penalty spot before Matthijs De Ligt equalised with 17 minutes left.

England thought they had won it when substitute Jesse Lingard completed a wonderful team move with a cool 83rd-minute finish only for the goal to be ruled out for offside by the tightest of margins on Video Assistant Referee review.

In truth, England struggled in the face of fierce Dutch pressing all evening and with 97 minutes on the clock, Stones dawdled in possession to trigger a calamitous sequence of events in which goalkeeper Jordan Pickford saved brilliantly from Memphis Depay only for Kyle Walker to turn the rebound into his own net as substitute Quincy Promes threatened to pounce.

And to compound their misery, Ross Barkley then gifted possession straight to Depay, who fed Promes for a simple finish which condemns England to a third/fourth place play-off against Switzerland on Sunday afternoon.

Netherlands capitalised on two England defensive mix-ups in extra time as they came from behind to win their Nations League semifinal 3-1 on Thursday and set up a showpiece with Portugal.

The Dutch went 2-1 ahead when defender Kyle Walker turned the ball into his own net after a mistake by team mate John Stones in the 97th minute and Quincy Promes completed the scoring in the 114th after Ross Barkley gave the ball away.

England thought they had scored in the 83rd when Jesse Lingard ran on to Barkley's pass to find the net but he was ruled a fraction offside after a two-minute VAR review.

The Dutch will now face hosts Portugal in Sunday's final in Porto, while England were left to contemplate a fourth successive competitive semifinal defeat following their losses at the 1990 and 2018 World Cups and Euro '96.

"It was a war of attrition," Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman said. "We have beaten Germany, France and now the number four team in the world -- this reflects our development. We haven't played semifinals and finals so this is new to us but we're taking it in our stride."
